Philosophy

The Greendale Tamil Unit is committed to fostering a love for the Tamil Language and culture through innovative and inclusive teaching. Aligned with the MOE Tamil Curriculum, the department develops students' proficiency in the respective language skills while nurturing confident and proud users of Tamil. Through learning journeys, departmental programmes, and Mother Tongue Fortnight activities, students build a strong sense of identity, cultural appreciation, and belonging that will stay with them throughout their lives.

Teachers integrate EdTech to create engaging, interactive, and personalised learning experiences. Through platforms such as the Student Learning Space (SLS) and multimedia tools, students develop their Tamil language skills while benefiting from collaborative and self-paced learning opportunities that cater to their individual needs.

In the lower primary classrooms, students learn through fun, hands-on activities such as songs, storytelling, role-play, picture matching, playdough letter formation, and magnetic word-building. These engaging experiences build vocabulary, pronunciation, communication skills, confidence, and a love for the Tamil language and culture.

As students progress to the middle and upper primary levels, they are equipped with explicit annotation strategies to strengthen comprehension and cloze skills. A progressive writing programme, supported by mind maps and constructive feedback, develops their composition writing skills through a structured and gradual approach.

Tamil Language Key Programmes

Mother Tongue Fortnight

As part of Mother Tongue Language Fortnight, students participate in a variety of engaging activities that deepen their appreciation of the Tamil Language, culture, and traditions. They explore traditional Indian sports such as Kabaddi and Kho Kho. They also take part in interactive cultural booth activities, including arranging traditional South Indian dishes on a banana leaf. Students enjoy heritage games such as Pambaram, Aadu Puli Aatam, and Pallanguzhi. These meaningful, hands-on experiences make learning enjoyable while fostering cultural awareness, appreciation, and pride.

EXTERNAL TAMIL LANGUAGE COMPETITIONS

Our Primary 4 and 5 students regularly participate in prestigious national platforms, including the National Primary School Tamil Spelling Bee Competition by Mediacorp. These events offer invaluable opportunities for students to showcase their linguistic talents, build confidence, and apply their learning beyond the classroom.

DEEPAVALI CELEBRATIONS

Our Deepavali celebration provide students with meaningful opportunities to learn about the festival and its traditions.

During recess, students participate in hands-on booth activities such as Kolam decorating and Kolam design cutting. These interactive experiences deepen students' understanding and appreciation of Deepavali in an enjoyable and memorable way.
