Philosophy

The Mother Tongue Language Department, guided by the core philosophy of "Joy of Learning", is committed to nurturing students into well-rounded individuals who "Love the Language, Love the Culture, and are Future-Ready".

To cultivate a love for the language, our curriculum takes a comprehensive approach to developing core skills. Building on a strong foundation in listening, speaking, and oral interaction, we further strengthen students' abilities in reading, writing, and written communication. Through creating an immersive learning environment, teachers actively broaden the spaces in which students can use the language, enhancing its practical value in everyday life so that it truly becomes a living language for our students.

In upholding the goal of nurturing a love for culture, the school places great emphasis on character development. Guided by the "21st Century Competencies Core Values", cultural appreciation is woven into daily instruction, carefully cultivating in students’ strong moral character and sound values.

To shape a generation of Future-Ready Learners, teachers aspire to skillfully integrate diverse pedagogical approaches with information technology in the classroom to spark students' enthusiasm for learning. By creating authentic and interactive learning contexts, we provide personalized learning experiences that empower students with the essential competencies to navigate and explore their own futures.

Chinese Language Key Programmes (主要活动)

Mother Tongue Fortnight & Language and Cultural Camp

Our school's annual "Mother Tongue Fortnight" is an important platform for putting the "Joy of Learning" philosophy into practice. To guide students in developing a love for culture, we organise a series of engaging and enjoyable learning activities that allow students to experience Chinese martial arts and traditional games first-hand, discovering the essence of Chinese culture in a fun and relaxed atmosphere. Through these immersive cultural experiences, the school creates authentic contexts for students to engage in oral interaction in Mandarin, encouraging them to listen and speak more during the activities, and naturally deepening their love for their mother tongue.

To nurture future-ready learners who have a love for the language, Primary 5 students challenge themselves during the Language & Cultural Camp by learning how to write Chinese scripts and produce short digital videos, as well as actively participating in competitions. This signature programme keeps Chinese Language learning in step with the times — significantly strengthening students' oral expression and written communication skills, while achieving a seamless integration of traditional culture and future-ready digital competencies.

Reading Programme

Our school's Reading Programme aims to cultivate a vibrant culture of joyful learning across the school through diverse reading experiences. For Primary 1 to 3, building on the Ministry of Education's SOAR reading programme, we have created class libraries where teachers read picture books together with students and facilitate interactive discussions. Primary 4 students engage in the guided reading of the classic novel "Journey to the West", immersing themselves in the beauty of culture through literary classics, before bringing the experience to life through a related theatre performance funded by the Cultural Performance Exposure Scheme (CPES).

To promote the development of communication skills under the enhanced 21st Century Core Competencies (E21CC), reading materials for Primary 5 and 6 shifts fully towards newspaper reading activities centered on authentic materials. Through ZBschools, an online Chinese news platform, students select and read current affairs articles closely connected to everyday life, broadening their global perspectives and deepening their learning through written reflections.

Class Competitions

The Chinese Language Unit firmly believes that diverse class competitions are an excellent platform for motivating students and showcasing team spirit. Our class competitions are tailored to the developmental characteristics of students across different levels. These varied and enriching competitions not only make Chinese Language learning enjoyable, but also organically foster class team spirit and equip students with the holistic competencies they need for the future.
